when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that

if we see the mitt romney as we saw in the last two debates, we will see an able candidate. >>> the annual event aims to bring people together to pray for members of the judiciary before they hear cases. some say it mixes religion and government. and there may be hot-button issues like affirmative action and same-sex marriage. the justices went their separate ways after the controversial health care ruling in june, and joe johns looks how the rooting may have affected the justices. >> they beginning of the new session the supreme court will be watched for signs of strain between the justices or anything else suggesting things may have changed since the health care ruling which was the biggest ruling in the court since bush versus gore a decade ago. after the supreme court judge, john roberts joked to colleagues that he would find an island to escape the heat. >> the charm has been more than usually taxing, and some have called it the term of the century. >> three months later the court is back and there are no signs of it cooling down. >> the justices are moving from the frying pan into th

the guy is a great debater as is mitt romney. i thought he dominated every debate this entire primary season and yet it was a very weak field. do you think that considering this is only the second time governor romney's ever debated a democrat, do you think he's been adequately prepared? >> well, those debates during the primary season were, at times, pretty intense and there were certainly enough of those to give governor romney some practice. and it's important that president obama hasn't done a proper debate in four years. so he's coming at this with the less time he's had that he did the debate. he was not even the president yet and now he's got to defend his record and talk about what he's done in a way that he hasn't had to over the course of the last four years. governor romney though is in a position where he is -- he's gotta do something different from what he was doing during the primary debates which is not appealing to the base or sort of getting through them without making a big disaster happen but instead, positivel

after the debate they were in the 60's, which is to say in this debate romney had two tasks. one was to explain why the president has failed and be very aggressive there that and then he had another task that sort of conflicted with the first in that he needs to be appealing enough that people would like him, find something worth voting for him about not just because they didn't like barack obama. well that number in the instant poll which those are fluky and shouldn't put too much emphasis on them but gives us inkling of where the currents are going. that's good for romney. i'll echo mike the campaign needed a pause in what was a slide. i think they got the pause and the question is now when you thank you about a new romney, he's had a lot of different iterations in his life. you can imagine the obama campaign trying to make sofg a mediocre debate will jump on that notion of new and say he's created a whole new persona than the guy who ran in the primaries. >> rose: norah. >> president obama left his greatest hit on the cutting room floor. there was no mention of bain or no
